Swara Bhasker is back on OTT with yet another web series. Titled Bhaag Beanie Bhaag, the six-part series released on Netflix today for the audience to enjoy over the weekend. Directed by Debbie Rao, Ishaan Nair and Abi Varghese, Bhaag Beanie Bhaag was termed as India’s answer to Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Now it is time to see whether the series is inspired by American period comedy-drama television series or offers a different take.

Bhaag Beanie Bhaag is about Beanie Bhatnagar (Swara Bhasker), a simple middle-class girl. She aspires to be a stand-up comedienne since childhood but her parents’ expectations made her pursue an MBA and then take up a boring 9-5 job. While she continues working, she doesn’t let her dreams take a backseat. At regular intervals, she participates in gigs at comedy clubs to perfect the skills required to be a successful stand-up comedienne.

On the other hand, she is getting engaged to Punjabi munda with moolah. However, on the day of her roka, she realises that she can’t afford to become a perfect housewife with children. In a quest to follow her heart, Beanie runs away from her roka ceremony to perform a gig on the stage. She fails to impress and freezes on the stage. From this point, she begins polishing her skills and focuses on her career as a stand-up comedienne. Bhaag Beanie Bhaag unfolds her journey, showcases the challenges faced by Beanie which she has to overcome to fulfill her dream.

Bhaag Beanie Bhaag is entertaining in parts. At times, it falls flat due to a lack of humour. In an attempt to make it relatable, the writers and director put funny moments and good laughs on the backburner. Though the series will keep you warm and fuzzy as it enjoys good moments too, you’ll crave a pure hilarious watch.

Swara shoulders a not-so-comical series ably. Her performance is as good as a freshly baked cake out of the oven. The actress transforms into Beanie effortlessly. However, her chemistry with the men seems awkward and everyone tries to make it seem effortless but fails to do so. Instagram influencer Dolly Singh who plays Beanie’s proverbial best friend, impresses with her act. She is funny as well as relatable. Varun Thakur, Ravi Patel, Girish Kulkarni and Mona Ambegaonkar do justice to their roles.

Flawed but binge-worthy, Bhaag Beanie Bhaag can make it to your list of shows to watch this weekend.
