Britney Spears Conservatorship row: Justin Timberlake extends support to former girlfriend, netizens slam him saying 'You played a role in this too, you’re not a hero'

On Wednesday, pop star Britney Spears appealed to a court during a virtual hearing to free her from her 13-year-long conservatorship. Calling it abusive, Britney, in her nearly 20 minutes long statement, said that she wants her life back. She told that the 'conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good' and she 'deserves to have a life'. After her statement was released in media, several stars stepped ahead to extend support to Britney.

Britney's former boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, tweeted in her favour and wrote, "After what we saw today, we should all be supporting Britney at this time. Regardless of our past, good and bad, and no matter how long ago it was… what’s happening to her is just not right. No woman should ever be restricted from making decisions about her own body."

He added, "No one should EVER be held against their will… or ever have to ask permission to access everything they’ve worked so hard for." Justin said, "Jess and I send our love, and our absolute support to Britney during this time. We hope the courts, and her family make this right and let her live however she wants to live."

However, this didn't go down well with many followers of Britney.

For the unversed, Justin and Britney were in a highly publicised relationship in the late ’90s and early 2000’s. He met Britney for the first time when they were kids on Disney’s The Mickey Mouse Club. After their breakup, Britney was reportedly slut-shamed by the media and was accused of being unfaithful and also the reason behind her and Justin's breakup. After claiming that he slept with Britney, Justin accused her of cheating on him and highlighted the same in his 2002's song, Cry Me a River.

Later, when the scene was highlighted in the documentary, Framing Britney Spears, Justin faced enough backlash and had to issue an apology. "I’ve seen the messages, tags, comments, and concerns and I want to respond. I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right. I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism…I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually, because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed," he wrote.

Apart from Justin, Britney received support from Liz Phair, Mariah Carey, Brandy Norwood, Halsey and Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty too.
