Sriram Raghavan to return to direct Badlapur 2 for Maddock Films

Yesterday, Amazon Prime Video announced a multi-year post-theatrical licensing deal with Maddock Films. The deal grants the OTT giant exclusive streaming rights to eight upcoming films from Dinesh Vijan's banner following their theatrical release. The films included ‘Thama’ and two more films from the banner's Horror-comedy Universe, ‘Param Sundari’ and ‘Shiddat 2.’ However, what caught everyone's attention was the inclusion of ‘Badlapur 2,’ a sequel to Sriram Raghavan’s 2015 gritty, neo-noir revenge thriller starring Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

The sudden announcement of ‘Badlapur 2’ has sparked widespread excitement among moviegoers, though Maddock Films has remained tight-lipped about further details. We checked with various industry sources about this latest development and have found that ‘Badlapur 2’ is surely in the works but is currently in the very nascent stage of scripting. Sriram Raghavan will return to direct the sequel, but the casting details—whether it will feature the same cast or a fresh ensemble—remain undecided.

“Sriram Raghavan and his writers are still shaping the story. They’re experimenting with some bold ideas and are diligently working to get the narrative right. The sequel will once again explore rage and revenge, though it’s too early to say whether it will be a direct continuation or a spiritual successor. Casting will depend on the final direction the script takes,” a source close to the development told us.

The ‘Badlapur 2’ announcement is particularly surprising given that the original 2015 film had a completed narrative. Furthermore, Raghavan is well-known for his reluctance to make sequels of his films, unless artistically justified, and it would be intriguing to see how the director revisits the morally complex and emotionally charged universe of the original for this unexpected sequel project. Raghavan and Dinesh Vijan are looking at taking the film into production in the first half of 2026.

Also starring Yami Gautam, Radhika Apte, and Huma Qureshi, Badlapur was critically acclaimed for its darkly ambitious storytelling and exhilarating performance. The film was not only commercially successful but also marked a turning point in Varun Dhawan’s career, establishing him as a serious actor beyond his mainstream comic roles.
