Storyline
Namit Malhotra's Ramayana begins with the journey of Prince Rama, the beloved heir to the throne of Ayodhya. The first part takes audiences through his early life, his association with sage Vishwamitra and his journey to Mithila, where he wins Sita's hand in marriage by lifting and breaking Lord Shiva's bow at her swayamvar. However, happiness in Ayodhya takes an unexpected turn when Queen Kaikeyi invokes her two boons and asks King Dashrath to send Rama into a 14-year exile. Choosing his father's promise over the throne, Rama leaves Ayodhya with Sita and his younger brother Lakshman. Their journey through the forest brings several important turns, including the encounter with Shurpanakha, the golden deer episode and Ravana's plan to abduct Sita. The first instalment explores these defining moments that shape the epic's larger conflict, setting the stage for the battle between Rama and Ravana in the second part. It beautifully establishes the emotional foundation of a story rooted in duty, sacrifice, love and righteousness.
Acting
Ranbir Kapoor delivers a graceful and compelling performance as Lord Rama. He captures the character's dignity, compassion, strength and righteousness with remarkable restraint. Yash is equally impressive as Ravana, bringing tremendous intensity and a powerful screen presence that makes him a formidable antagonist. Sai Pallavi as Sita is another major highlight. She brings grace, dignity and emotional depth to the character, beautifully portraying her resilience and inner strength. Ravie Dubey as Lakshman and Arun Govil as Dashrath add further depth to the ensemble. The cast collectively makes these iconic characters memorable.

Nitesh Tiwari deserves appreciation for bringing an epic of this scale to the big screen. The ambition behind the film is evident in every frame, from its detailed world-building to its spectacular visual presentation. The production design deserves special mention, with the kingdoms, palaces, landscapes and costumes creating an immersive world that captures the grandeur of the Ramayana. DNEG's visual effects are another major strength, adding incredible detailing to the film and making its larger-than-life moments a visual treat. The film is a significant step towards taking Indian storytelling to a global cinematic platform.
Dialogues
The dialogues beautifully carry the essence of the epic and its timeless values. The conversations around dharma, sacrifice, devotion and righteousness add emotional depth to the characters and their journeys. They also make the story meaningful for audiences who have grown up listening to the Ramayana as well as a new generation discovering it on screen.
Music
The collaboration between A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer are one of the biggest highlights of Ramayana. The coming together of two globally celebrated composers gives the film a distinctive musical identity. The background score deserves special appreciation for adding tremendous depth to the storytelling. It elevates the emotional moments, strengthens the intensity of important sequences and complements the film's magnificent scale. The music becomes an important part of the overall cinematic experience.
