Nominations for the Golden Globe Awards were announced recently and while many cheered that films like Marriage Story, The Irishman, Joker, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood got several nominations one thing that caught everyone’s attention was how not even a single female director was included in the Best Director nomination list. Although several films like The Farewell (Lulu Wang), Little Women (Greta Gerwig), Hustlers (Lorene Scafaria), Honey Boy (Alma Har’el), Clemency (Chinonye Chukwu) and others released this year, not one of them made the cut at the Golden Globes.
Check out some tweets below from netizens who called out the Golden Globes nominations for ignoring the female directors.

The last time a female director was nominated for a Golden Globe was in 2014 when Ava DuVernay was nominated for Selma!!! I can't even... pic.twitter.com/7mgk4ojGuE

Are you fucking kidding me with this fucking bullshit of having NO female writers nominated for a Golden Globe? And no female directors either?! You suck hard sometimes, Hollywood. Fucking catch up, Jesus

ALSO, no female directors at all? Even this year, with Farewell, Little Women, Mr. Rogers, Hustlers, et cetera? https://t.co/hx2POdlxTd

Golden Globe thoughts. I read a lot of these scripts. Saw the movies. I know the answer but here's a rhetorical question. Where in the hell are #Booksmart and #TheHustlers noms for female writing/directing? I know there's more but those for me stood out.

I try to keep it pretty positive over here butttttt this is an absolute tragedy and so discouraging. I realize award shows aren’t everything, but representation matters and there are so many women who have made incredible movies this year #GoldenGlobes https://t.co/6XaQ2SGlAC

With all the brilliant female writers and directors this past season, the #HFPA really needs to explain to us why NONE of them AGAIN were nominated for a #GoldenGlobe

No female directors nominated for Golden Globe? Utterly bonkers but sadly not that surprising! https://t.co/NWwPZqwk1k

to anyone that says there isn’t a problem with inequality between men and women in hollywood explain how MULTIPLE films with amazing reviews all directed by women came out this year and yet not ONE female director was nominated for a golden globe pic.twitter.com/AFPRUhuaNt

Me trying to navigate my love for the Golden Globe nominations, but also my frustration with the lack of female writers and directors nominated pic.twitter.com/czTpHbBhfI

Neeee female directors nominated for a golden globe AGAIN wowwwwww unimpressed

These Golden Globe noms are wack, and just further proof that these awards ceremonies are completely political, and financially influenced. Almost no people of color or female identifying people are nominated, despite incredible performances as actors or creators. #GoldenGlobe

can we talk about how not a single female director was nomitaned for a golden globe
— (@imsweet4yuu) December 10, 2019
: the lack of female Golden Globe nominees is sad bc they deserve such a award
: we should question the validity of the Golden Globes if they’re going to continue to discredit amazing female creators who are clearly deserving

So they’re really gonna nominate Joker and Todd Philips and not Lorene Scafaria for Hustlers, Olivia Wilde for Booksmart, Greta Gerwig for Little Women or Céline Sciamma for Portrait of a Lady on Fire. You can not say the female talent wasn’t there. #GoldenGlobe pic.twitter.com/ZoibVecr5B

The Golden Globes messed up. No female directors nominated. No Lodge 49 nominations. So lame. #GoldenGlobe #SaveLodge49https://t.co/4h1Oxy0nYs

Of course there were no female directors nominated for a Golden Globe. Of course Lupita was snubbed. Of course a man won country music's entertainer of the year. The patriarchy is scared... they have to maintain their dominance some how. pic.twitter.com/MWKLhAqAED

Not a single female director being nominated for a Golden Globe is actually disgusting. There are so many legitimate candidates who made incredible films this year.

The outrage did not only limit to the female directors being ignored but also the fact that the widely popular Game of Thrones was largely snubbed. However, the eighth and final season of GOT was largely panned and drew the ire of fans and is considered by many as the weakest across the series. However, the series still did win a whopping 12 Emmys, including best drama, from a record 32 nominations earlier this year. Kit Harington is the only actor who received a nomination for his performance from the series.
The 77th annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on January 5.
