In February, PeepingMoon.com exclusively reported that Netflix India’s high-budget fantasy series 'Rakt Bramhand — The Bloody Kingdom' had encountered serious financial irregularities during its production. A case of financial fraud was detected on the set, with the series’ executive producer accused of gross mismanagement of funds and widespread discrepancies in the accounting records.
Four months later, 'Rakt Bramhand' remains stalled, casting significant doubt on its future. Sources close to the project reveal that the Raj & DK show is likely to be called off due to financial woes. Although the final decision hasn't been made yet, insiders reveal that the streaming giant has put the show on indefinite hold following a review of its budgetary constraints with the newly appointed executive producer.
“About two weeks ago, Netflix held a closed-door meeting with creators Raj & DK and the new executive producer, who has previously worked with Aamir Khan's and Farhan Akhtar’s banners. They examined the existing budget and the actual costs required to move forward. The figures simply failed to align. Netflix has already incurred significant losses from earlier shoots — much of which needs to be reshot anyway — and they’re unwilling to invest further in what’s already deemed high-risk,” a source close to the development revealed.
The uncertain fate of this project can also be gauged from the fact that it has been facing consecutive production delays since the financial fraud emerged. Leading actors Aditya Roy Kapur, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Ali Fazal have quietly moved on to other projects because they are unaware of when — or if — the show will resume shooting. Complicating matters further, the script is reportedly undergoing major rewrites, resulting in a complete overhaul of the previously shot material. “They’re now required to reshoot everything from scratch, which means the 26 days of footage already filmed is being discarded. This adds a significant financial burden on a project that was already estimated to cost around 200 crore. Netflix has a history of abandoning projects to mitigate long-term losses even after considerable investment, and they seem to be heading in that same direction for 'Rakt Bramhand' as well,” another source told us.
When contacted, Netflix sent us a quote from Raj & DK, describing the show as merely “delayed.” However, sources say that they’ve been delaying this for so long now that it feels unlikely to restart anytime soon. “This is an ambitious epic project unfolding over multiple schedules. We just finished most of our indoor talkie schedule, and we are now prepping for the next big schedule that is mostly outdoors and action. The plan is to wait for the rains to clear for a suitable filming window. We also need lush greens for this period piece. So yeah, we are prepping for the next big action schedule,” Raj & DK said in a statement.
'Rakt Bramhand' was officially announced in July 2024, with 'Tumbbad' fame Rahi Anil Barve directing and Raj & DK serving as creators. Aditya Roy Kapur, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Ali Fazal play the lead roles in this show that promised a gripping, edgy narrative set against the backdrop of a fantastical kingdom with bloody action and spectacular visuals. But with mounting financial woes and production setbacks, whether this ambitious project will ultimately see the light of day remains to be seen.
