Warner Bros. dropped the second trailer for Todd Phillips' Joker. The pitch is the same as the teaser that dropped earlier in April about a grim, gritty, normal guy who descends into madness and crime due to the unkind world around him. Joaquin Phoenix stars as the Joker and if ever you can feel hopelessness, mold, and depression creep on you it is by watching the Joker trailer. There are hardly any visual effects, action sequences or jazz but the trailer leaves a mark on you and since it is about Batman’s arch-nemesis Joker, it is bound to be a huge hit.
The new Joker trailer comes ahead of its world debut at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, when the first reviews about the film will start pouring in. Phoenix’s take on Joker/Arthur Fleck is like a second skin and the actor’s descent into madness depicted in the trailer is exciting as well as unnerving. The film is an original, standalone fictional story where Fleck tries to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society.
Phoenix plays a clown-for-hire by day and aspires to be a stand-up comic by night but the joke is always on him. Caught between a society’s apathy and cruelty he soon spirals into the darkness where one bad decision causes a chain reaction in his character.
The film also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, Bill Camp, Glenn Fleshler, Shea Whigham, Brett Cullen, Douglas Hodge and Josh Pais. The film is written by Phillips and Scott Silver and is produced by the former and Bradley Cooper and Emma Tillinger Koskoff. Joker is slated to release on October 4.
