Here’s why Ileana calls her depression a blessing in disguise

Earlier today, we saw Alia Bhatt’s sister Shaheen open up about her struggle with depression. Now the generally low-profile Ileana D’Cruz has shared insights into her own struggle with the mental condition, adding that it was husband Andrew Kneebone who helped her get back on track.

“Things had got so bad that I was pushing people away. I didn't realise how much I was alienating people. I would constantly refuse to go out when friends would call. At one point, I didn't realise I was at home for a week... After that, I got an ultimatum from him,” said the Raid actress.

Today, Ileana feels she is a lot calmer. She no longer looks at life as being over if she doesn’t have films anymore; instead she believes there is so much more for her to do. Things have reached a point where she believes that her depression was, in a way, god sent. “That depression and that phase in my life, as horrible as it was, was needed in a way to switch things back and change who I was as a person,” she maintains.

Known to be fiercely guarded about her personal life, Ileana chose not to make a big announcement when she walked down the aisle with beau Andrew. Her rationale: “It's not important for me (to tell the world if I'm married or not). I do tell the world about my equation in a way, and let the world a little bit into my life.”

She prefers it this way because it helps her avoid the barrage of negativity. Even though she has learnt to live with it over her 12 years in the industry, she believes it is not fair to involve the others in her life and their families.

Speaking candidly about marriage and what it entails, she confesses that she had a different perception of relationship and love. “I was all giddy-headed and fairy-tale about it in my head, but it's so different. There's a lot of restraint that you've got to have, compromising in certain situations -- and you've got to have a lot of respect,” she maintains.

And as for talk of babies, well it is something she has always wanted but for now the stork can wait!
