Zee5 Tamil suspends its upcoming series ‘Godman’ after being slammed by religious groups for hurting sentiments

Zee5 Tamil has confirmed it is cancelling their upcoming controversial Tamil web series Godman after receiving severe backlash and criticism from religious organizations. The show was scheduled to stream from June 12 but the teaser came under furious uproar from the audience due to which the show has now been cancelled. The series centers on the character Ayyanad (played by Daniel Balaji), a petty criminal and womanizer who is brainwashed and transformed into becoming a self-proclaimed godman.

The teaser of the show that was released a few days ago has courted quite a few controversies as a line utter has come under scrutiny where a character asks, “Where does it say only Brahmins can read Vedas?” The quote has angered Brahmins and religious beliefs of Hindus for taking potshots at their religion.

Zee5’s statement read, “Basis feedback received with reference to our Tamil fiction show GODMAN, we have decided to suspend the release of this show at this moment. The producers show, ZEE5 had no intent whatsoever of offending or hurting any community, religious or personal beliefs or sentiments.”

On Monday, BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy had filed a complaint alleging that the series demeans the Brahmin community. A summon was also issued against the director Babu Yogeeswaran to appear before the police. The lead actor Daniel Balaji has also been targeted for working in the show. The teaser of the show has been taken off air too.
