Dhanush asked to pay Rs 30.33 lakh in 48 hours in tax evasion case by Madras High Court
The Madras High Court came heavily on Dhanush when it directed the actor to pay within 48 hours the balance of Rs 30.33 lakh out of Rs 60.66 lakh demanded by Commercial Taxes department in 2015 towards entry tax for a Rolls Royce Ghost imported by him from the United Kingdom. Justice SM Subramaniam issued the directive while disposing a writ petition filed by the actor six years ago seeking tax exemption in toto. He had paid 50% of the total entry tax demanded of him after complying with an interim order. When the writ petition was listed for final hearing, the judge ruled against Dhanush in a scathing order similar to case filed by actor Vijay. The judge said that it was not just the two actors but many other affluent people who make part payment of entry tax and ply their vehicles on the road by virtue of interim orders. He reasoned that the State ends up suffering huge losses for considerable number of years and the judiciary gets burdened with cases.
The judge also observed that litigants must pay their taxes dutifully and avoid the practice of filing cases seeking exemption and then suddenly agree to pay the money after many years as did Dhanush, as per his counsel. The judge also rapped the actor for withholding crucial information regarding his profession when he first filed the affidavit in 2015. The affidavit barely stated that the petitioner had purchased the luxury car for Rs 2.15 crore and paid a whopping Rs 2.69 crore towards customs duty and hence there was no need to pay entry tax too to the State government. However, the affidavit did not disclose that the deponent was an actor.
Madras High Court stays the Hindi remake of Suriya’s Soorarai Pottru
The Madras High Court has directed a stay on recently announced Hindi remake of Suriya’s Tamil film Soorarai Pottru. The Tamil film, based on the book Simply Fly-A Deccan Odyssey is authored by Captain GR Gopinath and was produced by Suriya and Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment. However, Guneet moved the court against Suriya over the remaking rights of the film, including in Hindi. She alleged that the Hindi film was to be made in collaboratin with her and Suriya but the actor went forward and made a deal with Abundantia Entertainment to produce the film and announced it as well without her consent.
Suriya recently took to his Instagram handle to announce the Hindi remake of his Tamil film Soorarai Pottru. The actor shared a photo of his meet with Abuantia Entertainment. He also announced that the remake of the film will be directed by Sudha Kongara. In the caption, he wrote, "Excited to announce our association with @Abundantiaent led by @ivikramix for #SooraraiPottru in Hindi, Directed by #SudhaKongara". As per reports, Akshay Kumar was supposed to play Suriya’s role in the Hindi remake. The story of Soorarai Pottru revolves around Nedumaaran Rajangam or Maara, played by Suriya who sets out to make his dream of the common man fly come true.
