Birthday Special: The Phenomenal Rise of Ranveer Singh

Earlier this year Ranveer Singh had let us in on an interesting personal detail. He revealed that he shared “a relationship of mutual admiration” with Deepika Padukone. And then he amended it… “But actually it isn't. I think it's a one-way admiration relation. I rate her highly as an actress and she doesn't. She is like, 'You are just a ham. Get out of here'.”
Even if Ranveer were ‘just a ham’, like his gorgeous girlfriend teases, he wins us over with his charming candor! Fact is, Ranveer is not just getting better as an actor with every single film and consistently rising to the top – he’s doing it with his infectious smile, bringing personal warmth to professional relationships and thoroughly enjoying the journey minus stress. It’s an art and it’s downright admirable.

BTW we wonder if Ms. Padukone still stands by her words after Ranveer was hailed for the “grotesque flamboyance” and “astute brilliance” of his portrayal as Khilji!

Right Choices

From his debut film Band Baaja Baaraat to his latest, Padmaavat, Ranveer has been unerringly picking all the right films. The roles keep getting bigger and better, making him perhaps the most popular and loved actor of this generation. If he impressed in his debut itself, he has consistently won appreciation in films that followed, including Lootera (2013), Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), Gunday (2014) Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018). The latter two also rank among the highest-grossing Indian films of all time, which have helped establish him as a leading actor in the Hindi film industry. Come awards season, his trophy shelf is bound to get more crowded. And the diversity continues, what him playing a rapper in a Mumbai ghetto in Gully Boy, followed by a larger than life cop in Rohit Shetty's Simmba, and India’s cricket captain Kapil Dev in 83.

Right Attitude

He appears all spontaneous and out there but there is some sharp and clear focus happening behind it all. As he tells it, “I have a very large vision for myself, my body of work, my career. I hope to build a vast legacy with a filmography of which I can be proud of when I am done. I want to look back and feel like I made a significant contribution to the art and yes, keep pushing the envelope and keep exploring to things that have not been done before.” He is on the right path alright.

Right Buzz

He effortlessly creates the right noise around him. From his quirky fashion choices to all the interest around his ladylove and impending wedding, Ranveer is never away from the headlines. The nice part is, he makes news for all the right reasons. A loyal and supportive beau, a great friend, a doting son, a B-town darling… his charm and innate lovability win overall. It is difficult for even his rivals to maintain any icy vibes when he envelopes them in a bear hug! As he tells it, affection and hugs are “as important to me as oxygen and water. I am very affectionate with everybody – my fans, my family. I was raised that way. My grandmother mollycoddled me. There was lots of hugging and kissing in my house.” …And may there always be! Happy birthday, Ranveer Singh!
