5 years of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Ranbir summed up the core of the film so beautifully

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is something of a modern classic. The film follows the journey of four characters during the most formative years of their life. Ranbir Kapoor had summed it up, saying, “I think what Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is really saying is that happiness is real only when it is shared. It is not about where you go in life but more about the people around you and usually we get so caught up in our own lives that we forget that.”

The characters were entirely relatable. Ranbir Kapoor was Kabir 'Bunny' Thapar, a travel-lover who doesn't take love seriously until he falls for Naina. Deepika Padukone as Naina Talwar, played a nerdy topper who falls for Bunny. Aditya Roy Kapur as Avinash 'Avi' Arora, is Bunny and Aditi’s best friend, a fun and flirtatious guy with a drink in his hand. Kalki Koechlin as Aditi Mehra, started out as a tomboy who matured in time. Audiences were hooked!

Ayan revealed that the idea of the film took flight one night when he was attending a school friend's wedding. He later shared, “Had this film not worked, it would have made me feel lost. With my first film Wake Up Sid (WUS) I was led on to the Bollywood bus… Now I believe I have a seat in the bus.”

The film was Ranbir and Deepika’s first, post their break-up. Deepika declared “We are thorough professionals, and there is no awkwardness working with each other. If we were not comfortable working together, we would not have agreed to do Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in the first place. We are good friends now and we share a similar passion for cinema. But once the shoot is wrapped, we go our own ways. And please don’t ask me if we are going to get back together – that will not happen.”

Speaking about his character, Ranbir had said, “My biggest challenge came from the fact that Bunny, the guy I play, is quite similar to me. I had to then play him using my own experiences as references which I found to be quite difficult. How do I play myself without making it boring? We had to think very carefully when adding dimensions to him without compromising on the believability part of it and staying true to Ayan’s vision for Bunny and the film as a whole.”
