Hrithik, Kangana, Alia, Ranbir & more: Fab homes of B-town celebs

It’s the place they retreat to after a day spent in a goldfish bowl; naturally a home is even more special to a star who lives in a constant spotlight. Here’s a walk-through some of our fave star homes that reflect the personality of their occupants…

Alia Bhatt: That ‘Lofty’ Feeling
Her very own home, Alia’s new Juhu residence saw the apartment’s four bedrooms remodelled to three. Her dressing room is separated by a lobby to ensure that the rest of the home stays private, even during fittings. Her large living room is a lovely blend of New York loft and Swiss chalet. Think white walls, comfortable sofas, concrete-tiled floors and large windows framing leafy green trees.

There is a noted lack of bling; all is muted, even the lighting. Yes, there is a bar complete with high stools – but it apparently only serves tea! Both Alia and her sister Shaheen who stay together are avid tea buffs.

A shelf in the corner of the hall holds a Best Actress award, a lamp, some greenery and books. Neither Alia nor the space she calls home is anything like one would expect from a typical Hindi film heroine – and more power to her!

Ranbir Kapoor: Sophisticated Sprawl
Even as their vast Pali Hill home KrishnaRaj is under renovation, Ranbir Kapoor has chosen to live independently in his own spacious pad at Vastu, Bandra. The interiors have been done by Gauri Khan, in a style that’s sophisticated, stylish and absolutely befitting the Kapoor scion. Dad Rishi Kapoor had taken to Twitter to thank Gauri for putting in her best efforts make Ranbir’s new house a home. “Wonderful! Gauri Khan! You have made a home out of Ranbir’s house. Beautifully done! Both Neetu and me are overwhelmed. Thank you!” he had shared. Ranbir himself had penned down his feelings about his new home, writing, “It has been a very inspiring and enjoyable experience working with Gauri. I didn’t know what to expect in putting my first home together but working with Gauri was amazing because, in an instance, everything was so personal and to my taste.”

Hrithik Roshan: Inner World
The star has likened the building of his home to a process of self-discovery – he wanted to explore what would manifest on the outside if he went by what he felt inside. The result is a sea-breezy affair, where a whitewashed brick wall and nautical elements rub shoulders with a plush dining area with an Astrolab glass table by Roche Bobois and a Raza painting. An all-white bar sits in a corner of the living room but the home is both kid- and pet-friendly – it radiates a feel of family and travel. He believes his home makes him feel safe and secure, offering comfort and privacy once he is back from the sets and locations. The den that adjoins the living room is his young sons’ fave with its foosball table, and even a vending machine that dispenses chocolates! For Hrithik, it is all about “building your inner which is about yourself” and it’s a continuous process that he delights in.

Parineeti Chopra: All at Sea!
It took a tour of nearly 30 houses before Parineeti settled on one – when she stood on the balcony and looked straight at the sea, she know this was it! She was completely involved in the designing of her Bandra home, which comes with many whimsical touches that are a personal reflection of herself.

The light coloured flooring and clean walls frame a comfortable looking blue couch and funky cushions, as well as the shelves of books and trophies. Two of its four bedrooms were converted into a make-up room and an entertainment room, which hosts a large library, DVD collection, home theatre and PlayStation. Her master bedroom has a wall adorned with a large world map with cityscape and vehicle shapes; quirky touch, that. Her fondness for travelling is there to see, as is her love for greenery, which is reflected in the bio wall. And the sea that peeps across – what could be better?!

Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna: Art & Heart
A duplex apartment that sits on beach, this beautiful residence is a virtual haven with its verdant exteriors and art and photograph-studded interior spaces. It has been Twinkle’s labour of love all the way, from drawing up architectural plans to choosing the last object d’art – and it all has a personal history to it. Spread over two floors, the living and dining space, the kitchen, a home theatre and a room that serves as Akshay’s walk-in closet occupies the ground floor. The bedrooms, a pantry, Khanna’s home office and a balcony with a daybed ideal for board games mark the upper storey.

If the lower level is all about the grandeur, pendant light installations and silver candelabras, the upper floor is refreshing in shades of grey with Italian-style sofas and a daybed. While Twinkle describes her home as a modern, clear-cut space with eclectic cultural references, Akshay loves the layers of green and blue, which greet his eye when he looks out. Either way, it’s their fave place in the world!

Kangana Ranaut: Rustic Chic
Kangana Ranaut’s four-bedroom apartment bears the rustic-looking walls, wooden beamed ceilings, and slate tiled-floors of her great grandmother’s ancestral house in Himachal. She has even had the upholstery specially aged to look like the mattress coverings made by mountain women out of old, worn-out clothes! The house is a happy melange of colour, quirk and lived-in comfort, while her bedroom also encloses her fave spot – her reading nook. The space for the swimming pool has been converted into a garden, which is an absolute sight for city-sore eyes. One corner of the drawing room hosts a small stone temple, designed by Kangana, which resembles those seen in smaller Northern towns. Her idea of a perfect house, she explains, is a place that takes her closer to her roots, while she looks into her future. Quirky frames, artefacts, art photographs, and room dividers with artwork dot the home, which is conspicuously devoid of any self-portraits – large or otherwise.  Interior Designer: Richa Bahl
