The Hindi dubbed version of Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of Ten Rings has incorporated a variation from its original version, seemingly keeping in mind the sentiments of Indians. In a particular scene, the translation of the word ‘beef’ in the original English audio has been changed and dubbed to ‘veg biryani’.
The scene in question shows Simu Liu, the titular superhero Shang-Chi going to China with his friend Katy (played by Awkwafina) to find his estranged sister. The scene that is filmed inside a flight he is given an option to choose his meal and the flight attendant asks them whether they will have beef or vegetarian, as there is no chicken and these are the only two options available. Katy says, “Vegetarian would be great.” In the Hindi dubbed version, ‘non-veg’ has been changed to ‘veg’ and then ‘veg-biryani’, whereas the Malayalam version has bread omelette and vegetarian as options since chicken is over. On the other hand, the Telugu dubbed versions the characters have chicken since vegetarian options are not available and in Kannada the choice is between chicken and paneer.
This is a scene from the movie @shangchi.
Well, the beef in this scene has been changed to veg biriyani in Hindi dubbed version. It's Upma in Tamil and bread omelette in Malayalam. Welcoming @MarvelStudios into India's beef poltics. pic.twitter.com/CqUUUW83KF— Rohit Thayyil (@RohitThayyil) November 13, 2021
Netizens shared the dubbed version on the internet. The change is not surprising since cow slaughter is banned in India and is taboo for Hindus. Big entertainment companies like Disney and Marvel have often cut or removed scenes and dialogues from films that they feel would hurt the sentiments of the people and governments not just India, but other markets like China and the Middle East.
