The trailer of the latest remake of A Star is Born is out and it is pushing all the right buttons. Cooper has also directed the film, in which he stars as veteran country music singer Jackson Maine. The scene opens to show him standing in front of a huge crowd, as he renders a ballad which includes the lyric “Maybe it’s time to let the old ways down”.
Maine goes on to discover Gaga’s character, who is a struggling artist called Ally. Her voice and potential star power captivate him. However, she is under-confident and doesn’t like to sing her own songs. “I just don’t feel comfortable,” she explains to him. “Almost every single person has told me that they liked the way I sounded, but they didn’t like the way I looked.” Maine, however, tells her, “I think you’re beautiful.”
What follows is an intimate relationship, success, and all the troubles it brings…
We are treated to a short glimpse of both the stars singing together as well in the trailer. The cast also includes Sam Elliott, comedian Dave Chappelle, and Andrew Dice Clay. Lady Gaga has apparently written several original songs for the film with Cooper and other artists, including Lukas Nelson, Jason Isbell and Mark Ronson.
Incidentally this is the third remake of 1937’s A Star Is Born. The original film had won Janet Gaynor the Academy Award for her role as an aspiring actress dealing with a fading star, who was played by Fredric March. The film was remade in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason, and then again in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.
For this third remake, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga had performed at Coachella and at Glastonbury, where they shared the same stage as Kristofferson. The film marks Lady Gaga's first leading role in a major motion picture, while Bradley came on as director following his work with Clint Eastwood in American Sniper. Incidentally, Eastwood had tried for years to get the film made starring Cooper and Beyonce as the young discovery. The film will release this October.
