Looks like the massive fallout from Dolce & Gabbana’s disastrous #DGLovesChina campaign back in 2018 is far from being over. In the new turn of events, this issue is back making headlines! Diet Prada has filed for the defense of their freedom of speech against the brand's defamation lawsuit from 2019.
It all started when the D&G filed a defamation suit against Instagram’s fashion watchdog Diet Prada’s founders Tony Liu and Lindsey Schuyler for posting about its controversial campaign. Besides cultural appropriation, what caused further outraged were the shocking DMs of Italian luxury brand’s co-founder Stefano Gabbana that were leaked by DP. When D&G tried to rebrand their image in China, their shady past continued to haunt them. Stefano claimed that his account was hacked and also issued a joint apology but the damage was already done. This led the brand to file a legal suit against the fashion police for its defamation. The suit demanded damage correction worth €3 million for Dolce & Gabbana and another €1 million for Stefano Gabbana himself.
On Monday, Tony and Lindsey hit back at the defamation suit by filing for a defense of their freedom of speech. “With so much anti-Asian hate spreading in the U.S., it feels wrong to continue to remain silent about a lawsuit that threatens our freedom of speech. We are a small company co-founded by a person of color, trying to speak out against racism in our own community,” Diet Prada said in its statement. Check out their entire statement below:
DP further stated that the Fashion Law Institute is coordinating their defense in collaboration with Italian law firm AMSL Avvocati and would be representing the watchdogs at a reduced rate.
