Bimal Roy’s classic ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ to shine at Venice film festival with 4K restored screening

There have been many such films in the history of Hindi cinema, which took the reputation of Indian cinema to new heights not only in the country but also internationally. One such classic film is 'Do Bigha Zameen', which was made by legendary director Bimal Roy in the year 1953. Now the 4K restored version of this film will be shown at one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, Venice Film Festival.

This special announcement has been made on the occasion of Bimal Roy's 116th birth anniversary. 'Do Bigha Zameen' has been selected under the Venice Classics section, where restored versions of classic films are shown. The English title of this film is 'Two Acres of Land'. The film will be screened by Bimal Roy's family members, Rinki Roy Bhattacharya, Aparajita Roy Sinha and Joy Bimal Roy. Along with them, Film Heritage Foundation director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur will also be present.

On this occasion, famous lyricist and filmmaker Gulzar has warmly welcomed this news and called 'Do Bigha Zameen' a history-making film. The story of the film is about a poor farmer who struggles for his land and life which has come under the grip of industrialization. This story is inspired by Rabindranath Tagore's poem 'Dui Bigha Jomi' and music composer Salil Chaudhary's short story 'Rickshawwala'. Stars like Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy and Meena Kumari played important roles in the film.

'Do Bigha Zameen' was the first film of Indian cinema which won the Prix International honour at the 1954 Cannes Film Festival. Apart from this, it also received honour at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. In India too, this film won major awards like Filmfare Best Film and Best Director. The 82nd Venice Film Festival will be held from August 27 to September 6, where this priceless gem of Indian cinema will be presented to a new generation.
