EXCLUSIVE: Did Sanjay Leela Bhansali suffer a Rs. 15 crore loss on scrapped ‘Inshallah’?

The buzz around Inshallah refuses to die down. And the latest rumour doing the round is that poor Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who anxiously waited 20 years to make another big-ticket film with Salman Khan after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1999, suffered a terrible loss of Rs. 15 crore on the scrapped project without even one minute of shooting having taken place.

That Inshallah was to be a big-budget contemporary love story rooted in Indian culture is known. The shooting was to commence two weeks ago with Alia Bhatt, who played Salman’s young love interest in the film, doing a solo scene at the elaborate set constructed at Mehboob Studios in Mumbai. But that did not happen because SLB decided to scrap the film rather than get into a creative tangle with Salman. What went wrong is being freely bandied around without either SLB or Salman making an official statement.

However, the losses that SLB reportedly suffered are attributed to the sets the filmmaker had enthusiastically readied for this magnum opus. There were other additional expenses as well, like for equipment, costumes, photo-shoots, not to mention the signing amounts paid to the technical staff and other artistes, the advance amounts spent on location bookings, doing a recce for the film and its music, etc. It all added up to the rather untidy amount of Rs. 15 crore that SLB reportedly had to bear.
