Akshay Kumar Birthday Special: From Adiyogi in OMG-Oh My God 2, a soldier in Gorkha, to an archaeologist in Ram Setu - a look at the actor’s diverse roles in upcoming films

Akshay Kumar is celebrating his 55th birthday today. The versatile actor who has been regaling the audience with his acting chops for decades has come a long way. Akshay is one of the most sought-after and bankable superstars of his generation. Besides wrapping up film-after-film in a year, the actor is also known for the diverse roles and subjects that he takes up, gone are the days of his action-hero and Khiladi avatar.

Here’s a look at some of the promising and diverse roles that he will be seen essaying in his upcoming films.

Akshay plays an archaeologist in the film investigating the nature of Ram Setu, known in English as Adam's Bridge. The action-adventure film is directed by Abhishek Sharma and also stars Jacqueline Fernandez, Nushrratt Bharuccha and Satya Dev. According to the epic Ramayana (7th century BCE to 3rd century CE), Ram Setu is a bridge built by the god Rama's army of Vanara to reach Lanka to rescue his wife Sita, who was abducted by Lanka's Rakshasa king Ravana. The film is slated for a theatrical release on 21 October 2022 coinciding with Diwali.

Selfiee is the official Hindi remake of the Malayalam hit Driving License. The film is produced by (late) Aruna Bhatia, Hiroo Yash Johar, Supriya Menon, Karan Johar, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Apoorva Mehta, and Listin Stephen under their production banners Cape of Good Films, Dharma Productions, Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames respectively. The film sees Akshay playing a celebrity in the film. It also stars Emraan Hashmi, Nushrratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty. The film is slated to hit theatres on February 2, 2023. The film is currently filming.

After the resounding success of OMG-Oh My God that had Paresh Rawal and Akshay in the lead role, the sequel, OMG-Oh My God 2 sees the latter play the role of Lord Shiva. OMG-Oh My God 2 stars Pankaj Tripathi, Yami Gautam and Arun Govil alongside Akshay. The film revolves around the subject of Indian education system and is a Hindi language satirical comedy-drama film written and directed by Amit Rai. The film is currently in the works.

Soorarai Pottru remake

Akshay will headline the official Hindi remake of Suriya’s Soorarai Pottru. The film is partly inspired by events from the life of Simplifly Deccan founder G. R. Gopinath as described in his memoir Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey. Akshay will play the role of the aviation pioneer. The yet-untitled film will once again be directed by Sudha Kongara, who helmed the original. The film also stars Radhika Madan and Paresh Rawal (who will be reprising his role from the original). The film’s release date is yet to be announced.

Capsule Gill

Once again, Akshay is set to bring a diverse role to his filmography with the tentatively titled Capsule Gill. Akshay plays the role of additional Singh Gill, who rescued miners stuck inside the Raniganj Coalfields in eastern Indian in 1989. The film also stars Parineeti Chopra in the lead. Kumud Mishra, Pawan Malhotra, Dibyendu Bhattacharya and Ravi Kishan play key roles in the film. It also features Virendra Saxena, Varun Badola, Rajesh Sharma, and Anant Mahadevan in supporting roles. The film is slated to release in theatres in the second half of 2023.

Gorkha is one of Akshay’s highly-anticipated upcoming films. The film is based on the life of war hero Major General Ian Cardozo from the prestigious Gorkha Regiment of the Indian Army. The actor will be seen essaying the lead role in the film, which is directed by Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan and produced by Aanand L Rai and Himanshu Sharma. The film is currently in the works.

Akshay will team up with Tiger Shroff in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. The film is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and produced by Jackky Bhagnani. The film will see Akshay return back to the action genre and it will be interesting to see Tiger pit his martial arts skills against the veteran Khiladi Kumar. The is scheduled to release on Christmas 2023.
