I don’t think anyone would come to a theatre to watch wonderful perfect people: Shahid Kapoor talks about his role in Kabir Singh and the flak Arjun Reddy had received for glorifying violence

Shahid Kapoor launched the trailer of his upcoming film Kabir Singh this afternoon along with co-star Kiara Advani and director Sandeep Vanga. The film is the Hindi remake of much appreciated 2017 Telugu film Arjun Reddy. At the launch event, the actor was asked several questions about his role of an angry young rebel lover.

One such question mentioned how Arjun Reddy was a well-praised film but it also received flak because for it's sexist take and glorified violence against women which is a certain manner. Shahid was questioned how he will justify his role of Kabir Singh because the scenario is changing today and woman are standing up for their rights. Shahid took a strong stand and stated, "Look at cinema which is made in India and then look at things which are made internationally and to praise them for the fact that they’re so honest and they’re not trying to be politically correct. You know cinema is meant to showcase different people having different experiences, behaving differently. It’s not about wonderful perfect people. I don’t think anyone would come to a theatre to watch wonderful perfect people. I think we all are imperfect people and have grey areas within ourselves. We all go through good phases and bad phases."

"We all have been angry at some point in time, we all have been hurt at some point in time, we all have been negative at some point in time. And to me, watching a film like Kabir Singh, one will help you understand that when you allow yourself to be affected by those things, it can take you to the path of destruction and it can warn you. And on the other hand, for the people who have been there, it can be therapeutic because cinema acts as medicine. You know you see something you relate to. To me, Kabir Singh is a very cathartic film because I think it makes you very honestly go through the journey of a man without being very sugar-coated about it because then that’s not making something substantial. That is manipulative and I think Sandeep has made a very honest film and you must watch this film knowing that," added Shahid.

Based on a brilliant yet impulsive young surgeon who falls into a path of self-destruction after the love of his life is forced to marry another man, Kabir Singh is all set to release on June 21, 2019.
