YRF Spy Universe losing its spark? Alpha records the franchise's lowest opening weekend

There was a time when Yash Raj Films' Spy Universe was considered a guarantee of box office success. Films like Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, and Pathaan set new records with impressive opening weekend collections. But in the last few years, the franchise's momentum seems to be slowing down. Now, Alia Bhatt and Sharvari starrer Alpha has recorded the Spy Universe's lowest opening weekend collection ever.

According to preliminary figures from Sacnilk, Alpha grossed 34 crore (India nett) in its first weekend. In comparison, Pathaan earned 280.75 crore, War 2 earned 175.75 crore, War earned 166.25 crore, Tiger Zinda Hai earned 114.93 crore, and Tiger 3 earned 44.50 crore in its opening weekend. These figures clearly indicate that Alpha has had the weakest opening for the YRF Spy Universe.

Ever since the film's trailer was released, it received mixed, but largely negative, reactions on social media. Even after its release, criticism continues to surface online regarding the film's story, screenplay, casting, and several characters. It is believed that this negative word of mouth may impact the film's box office earnings.

Interestingly, the graph of YRF Spy Universe also doesn't seem as strong as before. Tiger 3 also didn't receive the expected response from audiences and critics. In such a situation, Alpha's weak opening weekend indicates that the franchise needs to rework its story and presentation, as the tag of "Spy Universe" alone is no longer proving to be enough to draw audiences to theatres.

So far, Alpha has grossed 34 crore in its opening weekend. All eyes are now on the film's lifetime box office collection. It will be interesting to see whether Alpha can bounce back from its initial slow start or will end up among the weakest grossing films of YRF Spy Universe.
