Kalank Teaser: Nine moments you might have missed from Sanjay-Madhuri, Varun-Alia and Aditya-Sonkashi eternal love saga

The wait is finally over, the teaser of one of the year’s most-awaited films Kalank has finally dropped and we must say it has managed to create quite a furore. With breathtaking visuals and larger-than-life canvas, Kalank promises to be an extravaganza that should only be watched on the big screen. Starring Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha, Kalank looks as if it is going to live up to the gigantic expectations.

Directed by Abhishek Varman and produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala, Kalank was conceived fifteen years ago by KJo. The power-packed teaser managed to evoke more questions than answers about the story and the various complex characters it entails. Here are nine crucial moments from the teaser that you might have missed while watching it for the first time which we feel are very important and bear great relevance to the film.

1.Aditya and Alia sitting in the mandap Aditya Roy Kapur and Alia Bhatt in a still from Kalank

Aditya has got enough footage in the teaser but every time we see him it is as if he is walking dead with deep anguish and grief simmering under his surface. We see him and Alia sitting in the mandap but neither of them looks happy or delighted at the prospect of getting married to each other. Also since the teaser hints at a love story between Alia and Varun, this new pairing has put everything in a tangle. Not to forget Alia’s dialogue in the scene, “Jab Kisi aur ki barbadi apni jeet jaisi lage, toh humse zyada barbad aur koi nahi iss duniya mein,” hints at a deep-seated hatred or revenge that she is out to take.

2.Varun as a matador  Varun Dhawan in a still from Kalank

Varun is shown as a man who is fearless and a daredevil. He plays a matador in a bullfighting scene and eventually manages to control the raging animal.

3.Varun and Ramayana symbolism Varun Dhawan in a still from Kalank

We get to see Varun walk in front of a few men who are dressed as Lord Rama and are carrying bows and arrows poised to strike. We wonder what the symbolism behind this is since in the very next scene he is seen meeting Alia. Does this have some indication that like Lord Rama and Sita, Varun will also not be able to be with Alia in this life?

4.Alia and Varun in front of Ravan Dahan Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in a still from Kalank

Alia and Varun are presumably playing lovers where Varun who is named Zafar presumably plays the role of a Muslim man in love with Alia who plays Roop (probably a Hindu) which again is a rebellious act of going against the societal norms. We get to see them meeting in secrecy in front of the burning effigy of Ravana that signifies the ending of evil. We also get to hear Arijit Singh croon in the background, “Kalank nahi, ishq hai, Kajal Piya” signifying that the film does not have a lucid and clear love story of boy-meets-girl and they lived happily-ever-after.

5.Alia sitting in front of a pyre Alia Bhatt in a still from Kalank

From the teaser, we get an inkling that Alia is out for revenge and we get to see a chilling scene of her sitting in front of a pyre in an empty dilapidated building. We wonder what exactly does the scene entail. Is she offering a sacrifice or is she actually doing some ritual to defeat her enemies?

6.Sonakshi's dilemma Sonakshi Sinha in a still from Kalan

In the entire teaser, if there is one person to whom your heart goes out to, it is Sonakshi. Right from her first look poster, we got an idea that hers was a tragic figure, bowed down by rules, expectations and sacrifice. In fact, her character aptly named Satya was defined as, “Love, longing, integrity and sacrifice... this is what SATYA stands for.” In the stills from the teaser, we see her grief-ridden, crying bitterly and we get the feeling of her helplessness. In one scene, we see her sitting across Sanjay Dutt which looks like a meeting without any warmth and we get to see the emptiness and inadequacy Sonakshi feels. We’re sure that this scene has great relevance on the film and will be a major turning point in Kalank.

7.Aditya's and Sonakshi's emotional turmoil  Aditya Roy Kapur in a still from Kalank

When the first look posters were unveiled, Aditya’s character was revealed as Dev Chaudhry and Sonakshi’s as Satya Chaudhry which prompted us to believe that they are playing husband and wife. We also get to see Aditya and Sonakshi share a tender yet emotional moment in the teaser which is also mired with some deep-seated grief as both of them look as if they are on the verge of tears. Yet, we get to see Aditya sitting in the mandap and about to get married to Alia.

8.Kriti Sanon's dance number Kriti Sanon in a still from Kalank

It was reported that Kriti Sanon has been roped in for a special dance number for the film and we get to catch a glimpse of it in the teaser. Did you manage to see her?

9.Sanjay vs Madhuri  Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit in a still from Kalank

Sanjay Dutt plays the formidable Balraj Chaudhry probably a landlord or one of the elites and Madhuri plays a courtesan named Bahaar Begum. However, as we all know that the two classes often got entangled due to their relationship; here also we get to see Madhuri and Sanjay share a tense moment with each other. Are they hiding something?

Will Kalank also have a subplot of their younger years where they were in love and had to part ways due to the societal rules. Well, our guess is as good as yours.
