Subhash Ghai wants Ranbir Kapoor and Varun Dhawan to star in Ram Lakhan remake

Ask any Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff fan for their favorite film in which the two actors starred together and invariably they will name Ram Lakhan. Subhash Ghai directorial was a blockbuster hit and had the actors playing brothers. It was being speculated that Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor would be shaking a leg to the popular song My Name is Lakhan at Sonam Kapoor’s sangeet ceremony. However, Anil and Arjun took to the dance floor and grooved on the song with the former even trying to play a dafli like the one he did in the film.

Subhash Ghai attended the re-premiere of the hit film in Mumbai over the weekend and when quizzed about which young actors can step into Jackie and Anil’s shoes if the film is remade the director without any hesitation named Ranbir Kapoor and Varun Dhawan. Ghai said that Kapoor and Dhawan can make for an ideal new age Ram and Lakhan in the remake of his 1989 film.

He said, “There are many brilliant actors today. Ranbir and Varun are great.” He also said that even if the film had newcomers it would still fare well at the box office as the story and the characters are much stronger than the actors. He said, “When I had started Ram Lakhan, both these actors (Anil Kapor and Jackie Shroff) were coming from five flops each. People had written them off. But I took them because, in this film, characters are stronger than the stars.”

Surprisingly, Rohit Shetty and Karan Johar had actually announced their plans on making a remake of the film way back in 2014, but the project has been on the backburner ever since. Ghai said, “They're taking their time. I know whenever they'll make the film, they'll make it well.” The film is still in its initial stages and no lead actors have been cast for it. However, names of Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan; Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh were doing the rounds for some time. Anil Kapoor who played Lakhan in the original was backing Shahid and Ranveer’s pairing for the film.

Jackie played the older brother who is a righteous cop whereas Anil played the street-smart younger brother who joins the police force to take revenge from the antagonists in the film. The original film starred Rakhi, Madhuri Dixit, Dimple Kapadia, Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, Anupam Kher and Satish Kaushik in lead roles.
