Selection Day Trailer: Netflix’s new cricket drama will bowl you over

Netflix released the trailer of its third original Indian series Selection Day which is based on Aravind Adiga’s novel of the same name. By the looks of it, the series will definitely bowl you over. Selection Day is the story of two brothers - Manju and Radha- who are raised by their strict obsessive father to become star cricket players for India.

In most sports drama we have the protagonist usually rebelling against their parents’ pressure of following the herd and trying to make them understand that their talents lie on the field rather than between books, but here in Selection Day the plot is different. The trailer shows that when the family moves to Mumbai and the brothers start at a new school, the father’s coaching methods are in stark contrast to the cricket academy’s coach. The series promises drama, chaos and tears as well as a cameo by God in the form of a very cool-looking Shiv Pandit.

The trailer shows Manju discovering that his interests lie outside of cricket and starts slipping away from Radha and his father’s grasp, but still harbouring the dream that his brother becomes the best batsman in the world. He also becomes friends with Radha’s cricketing rival, a boy who makes him realize the importance of freedom and confidence.

Selection Day stars Ratna Pathak Shah, Mahesh Manjrekar, Rajesh Tailang and debutantes Yash Dholye and Mohammad Samad as brothers Radha and Manju. The series is being co-produced by Anil Kapoor and Anand Tucker. Selection Day will premiere on December 28 on Netflix.
