Brand IIFA: Green Carpet, IIFA Weekend & Awards – all you need to know about the International Indian Film Academy Awards

The International Indian Film Academy Awards, popularly known as IIFA, is one of India’s most prestigious award ceremonies pertaining to the Hindi film industry. It is an annual awards ceremony for the Indian Film Fraternity where the winners are decided by fans who vote online for their favourite actors and films. Instituted in the year 2000, the ceremony is held in different countries across the globe every year in order to break geographical barriers and even hosts several international celebs that are roped in to present the awards.

IIFA is the first international award for Indian cinema and was first presented in 2000 at The Millennium Dome in London, United Kingdom. From then, the awards have travelled to several countries around the world signifying Bollywood’s supremacy. Since its inception it has also expanded from a one-night event to a three-day celebration, hosting various activities and events relating to the Indian film industry. The IIFA Awards have been held in London, Dubai, Bangkok, New York, Colombo, Amsterdam, Madrid, Florida, Kuala Lumpur, Macau and Abu Dhabi.

IIFA is also unique in its choice of the carpet on which the stars put their most stylish foot forward. IIFA hosts a bright green carpet instead of the traditional red coloured one. It was first introduced at the event in Sheffield, UK, in 2007; it not only stands out but delivers an important global message about climate change and sustainability. In 2007, the concept of ‘Greening the IIFAs’ was launched that would convey a strong message of sustainability and climate change through the celebrities walking the green carpet.

IIFA has got several International stars to rub shoulders with the celebs from Indian film fraternity boosting Bollywood's popularity globally. Jackie Chan, Kylie Minogue, Angelina Jolie, Colin Firth, Sienna Miller, John Travolta, Hilary Swank, Keanu Reeves have all participated in IIFA awards over the years as presenters, performers and guests walking the green carpet.
