Brilliant, bad, a little bit mad! Emma Stone brings to life the notorious fashion forward antagonist Cruella

Cruella De Vil, one of Disney’s most notorious, fashion-forward and puppy-killing antagonist of 101 Dalmatians is finally stealing the spotlight in an upcoming film titled Cruella. The first trailer of her standalone film sees Emma Stone stepping into the shoes of Glenn Close in a prequel film that explores the backstory of the villain with panache.

The live-action prequel about the infamous fashionista dives into Cruella’s origin in 1970s London, where a young grafter named Estelle, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs set the stage on fire. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets.

Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), but their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella. “I wasn’t for everyone, I guess they were always scared that I’d be a psycho.” Emma’s Cruella says in voiceover in the first trailer. The film explores Cruella’s slow descent into dog skin obsession and we get to see the Dalmatians in the trailer as well.

The film also stars Mark Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Jamie Demetriou, Joel Fry and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. Craig Gillespie has directed the film with Tony McNamara having written the recent iteration of the script, with Dana Fox having penned a previous draft. Marc Platt, Kristin Burr and Andrew Gunn are producing the film, with Glenn Close, who portrayed de Vil in the 1996 live-action remake, serving as one of the executive producers.

Cruella is set to release theatrically on May 28.
