Luca Guadagnino to helm the reboot of Al Pacino’s classic film ‘Scarface’

Director Luca Guadagnino has been roped in to direct the remake of the classic Scarface. The Oscar nominee will be helming the Universal Pictures project, which earlier had David Ayer and Antoine Fuqua as a part in different times. According to media reports, the remake has been in development since 2011.

This is not the first time Scarface is being remade. The story of the gangster-immigrant has been made twice before. Howard Hawks made the 1932 version while Brian De Palma directed acclaimed star, Al Pacino, as Cuban gangster Tony Montana in 1983.

The upcoming reboot is based on a script by Joel and Ethan Coen and will be set in Los Angeles and is a reimagining of the core immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films. The earlier drafts of the film have been written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Jonathan Herman and Paul Attanasio. Guadagnino is also thinking to develop a sequel to Call Me By Your Name, tentatively titled Find Me. The film might feature Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer.

Scarface will be produced by Dylan Clark for his Dylan Clark Productions alongwith SVP Brian Williams who will executive produce for the productions. Scott Stuber will executive produce alongside Marco Marabito. Jay Polidoro, Senior VP of production and director of development Lexi Barta will oversee the project for Universal. On the other hand, Gaudagnino had recently helmed a remake of Suspiria for Amazon Studios, which starred Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton and Chloe Moretz. His Call Me By Your Name had earned him an Oscar nomination previously.
