Watch: Lilly Singh opens her late-night show ‘A Little Late With Lilly Singh’ with a bang, Mindy Kaling makes for an inspiring yet funny first guest

YouTube star Lilly Singh made an impressive debut with her new show A Little Late With Lilly Singh that premiered last night on NBC. Her first guest on the show was Mindy Kaling, a media mogul who successfully shattered down TV barriers. The video that has been released from the show, shows Mindy and Lilly talking about how the former held an open audition for playing a 15-year-old Mindy on her upcoming autobiographical and as-yet-unnamed Netflix series.

Mindy in the clip reveals that she received 15,000 applications for the role and they eventually settled for Tamil-Canadian Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, the first-time actress who’ll be playing, essentially, young Mindy on Kaling’s upcoming show. In the video, we also get to see a fun segment where Mindy plays ‘What’s the word’. The segment was pretty hilarious as the guest had to guess the post-millennial slang of the words and she pretty sucked at it. Watch the video below

Lilly had lit up the stage with her intro as the show opened where she broke into a rap to make white men understand how her show is different from the regular late-night talk shows. In the rap, she says, “This used to be boys club but I am knocking down the door." She also spoke about how her writer’s room has more that 50 percent women and people from all races.

Talking about the diversity and inclusion that she is bringing through her show, Lilly sang, “My writer's room looks like a mini United Nations with more than 50 per cent women and people of all races. And that's not because I had to, it's because I could. This is the new standards, so take notes, Hollywood.”
