Just like Drogon, Game of Thrones fans are not ready to bid goodbye to the Mother of Dragons just yet

So this is how it ends? Mixed reviews are pouring in for the series finale of Game of Thrones but one thing all fans can agree upon is the shocking death of Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke.

Even though Daenerys’ death has been predicted for a while, what shocked fans as they way her character’s story ended in the show and the gut-wrenching role her lover/nephew Jon Snow and her last dragon Drogon had to play in her death. Fans have since taken to social media to share their disappointment at the anticlimax (yet again).

In case you are not up to date here is what happened. Daenerys, having just won King’s Landing and the Iron Throne that she’d been attempting to capture for years, was murdered by none other than her nephew, lover, and the show’s other main hero Jon Snow.

Just before the pivotal scene, fans saw Jon torn between his loyalties to his Queen and doing what was right. He was appalled when Dany, as he fondly called her, burned the entire city of King’s Landing during her siege and was shocked to see Grey Worm executing defenseless Lannister soldiers who’d been taken as prisoners of war.

Meeting her at the Red Keep, in front of the Iron Throne, Jon realised that Daenerys is not willing to change her ‘Mad Queen’ tendencies. The two then lovingly embrace when Jon professes his love and loyalty to Dany after she asks him to be with her and rule together and that was when he put a dagger through her heart.

The heart-wrenching moment came just after when Daenerys’ last remaining dragon, Drogon appeared, having sensed some foul behaviour. In the tear-jerking scene, he tried to wake up his ‘mother’ Daenerys but to no avail. Angered, he burns down the Iron Throne, symbolically depicting it as the reason behind Daenerys’ death and not a person or Jon himself.

So in the end, it was Drogon who fulfiield his mother’s goal of ‘breaking the wheel’ of rulers in Westeros by literally burning and destroying the Iron Throne. One could feel the pain and sadness felt by the dragon as he flew off with Daenerys body. By not attacking Jon, viewers felt even worse as they could the pain behind Drogon's knowledge of the real reason behind his mother’s death.

Fans of the show have since taken to social media to criticise the anticlimactic and satisfying way Dany went out. Viewers were already displeased by the character assassination of Daenerys in the previous episodes of the season and this just added like a last gut-punch to every fan who has ever looked up to or invested in her as a character.
