‘Asur’, widely acclaimed as one of India’s finest streaming series since the OTT boom, is set to return with a new and gripping chapter. Jio Hotstar has officially renewed ‘Asur’ for a third season, PeepingMoon.com has reliably learned. This comes nearly two years after the success of Season 2 that had premiered to widespread acclaim in 2023 and became one of the most-watched Indian series that year.
Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti will return to reprise their fan-favorite roles as forensic experts Dhananjay Rajput and Nikhil Nair, respectively. Gaurav Shukla, the creator and writer of the series, has been meticulously crafting the new season for the past two years and recently received the go-ahead from the platform. The makers are targeting to commence production by the end of this year, with plans to premiere it in late 2026.
The first two seasons of ‘Asur’ enthralled viewers with a gripping narrative centered on a team of forensic experts locked in a deadly cat-and-mouse game with a serial killer who believes himself to be an incarnation of the mythological demon Kali. Blending mythology with psychological suspense, the show won praise for its cerebral narrative, taut storytelling, and philosophical undertones. With Season 3, the creators aim to raise the stakes further, introducing more sinister psychological conflicts, deeper explorations of Indian mythology, and a fresh perspective on the eternal struggle between chaos and order.
Meanwhile, there's a potential change in the directorial seat. We hear Oni Sen, who directed the first two seasons, is unlikely to return to helm Asur 3 due to scheduling conflicts. Sen is currently directing a high-profile Netflix war drama based on Operation Safed Sagar, starring Siddharth, Jimmy Sheirgill, Dia Mirza, and Abhay Verma in lead roles. The scale and demands of that project are expected to keep him engaged throughout the year, making it difficult for him to commit to ‘Asur 3’. The makers are now looking for a new director to lead the project, though no one is finalized as yet.
