PeepingMoon Exclusive: Kiran Rao reveals receiving immense support from Aamir Khan, says 'he's been sensitively aware of my struggles as a filmmaker'

Kiran Rao made a smashing comeback as a director with Laapataa Ladies. She ended her decade-long break with the poignant socio-drama produced by Aamir Khan Productions Pvt. Ltd. The film sheds light on women's empowerment among many social issues. In an exclusive interview with PeepingMoon, Kiran recalled how she's been supported by feminist men. Crediting Aamir Khan for being a great support, the director said he understood her struggles and recognised her determination to make a different film.

Kiran told us, "Aamir has been so supportive and so understanding of my struggles as a filmmaker, of what I wanted to do. He saw me struggling while I was writing all these years trying to make a film. He has been sensitively aware of what I was going through. When he found the story [of Laapataa Ladies], the fact that he thought of me and thought I could do it is also because he did realise that I not just have it in me, but I'm desperate to do something different, something that challenges me. Aamir has been a great support."

Laapataa Ladies starred Ravi Kishan, Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava and Pratibha Ranta. It released in theatres on March 1.
