PeepingMoon Exclusive: Karisma Kapoor to headline Delhi Belly director Abhinay Deo's debut Zee5 series

Karisma Kapoor was one of the first mainstream Bollywood actresses from the 90s to make her comeback with an OTT project. The actress who ruled the 90s and early 2000s with films like Coolie No.1, Raja Babu, Raja Hindustani, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, and Zubeidaa, among others, returned to acting with an Alt Balaji and Zee5 series, Mentalhood, in 2020. The Ekta Kapoor-backed show that explored the multitasking nature of different types of mothers and their ways of leading the best upbringing of their children, however, failed to get any traction among the viewers. Since then, Karishma has been looking for a new project that would give her exposure, and it seems she has finally found one in the upcoming Zee5 series.

Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that Karisma Kapoor is doing one more web series for Zee5. It’s a yet-untitled drama series and will see the actress playing a strong-willed woman entrapped in a frightening situation. Delhi Belly director Abhinay Deo is helming this female-led story and will start its production sometime next month. Besides Karisma, the show also stars veteran actress Helen in a pivotal role. The legendary Hindi cinema actress, who has appeared in over 700 films, is returning to acting over a decade after her last appearance in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine, which interestingly starred Karishma’s sister Kareena Kapoor Khan in the lead.

Filmmaker Abhinay Deo has been planning to explore the OTT space for the last few years and is finally set to make his web debut with this Karisma Kapoor show. The director was earlier working on the Aankhein sequel with Amitabh Bachchan, Sidharth Malhotra, Akshaye Khanna, and Sunil Grover, but that film was put on the backburner after Bachchan backed out of it. His other film, Doosra, has been ready for a while now and will soon be released directly on an OTT platform. Doosra is a socio-sports drama that highlights courage and freedom of expression through one incident that gave Indians the feeling of liberation. Lipstick Under My Burkha actress Plabita Borthakur, and Slumdog Millionare fame Ankur Vikal play the lead roles in this film.
