PeepingMoon Exclusive: ‘Nepotism is something that gives you your first chance but after that you’re on your own,’ says Vikram Bhatt's daughter Krishna Bhatt

Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt’s daughter Krishna Bhatt has made a name for herself behind the camera just like her Dad. The young star kid followed her passion for filmmaking instead of taking up acting like most others. She took up production with Vikram’s film Hacked and went on to direct Twisted and web shows like Maaya 3 and films like Badnaam in the past. Recently, Krishna released her latest web series titled Sanak-Ek Junoon.

Was direction always your passion?

I was 12 years old when I went to my father’s office for the first time. I think 1920 was being edited and I think it was love at first sight for me as I was not privy to the film world till then as my parents were divorced. I think the minute I realized that there is so much to filmmaking that I fell in love with it and I always saw my Dad on sets and I always wanted to be in that director’s chair and call the shots, not only be a part of one aspect but a part of all the aspects that are there and that has always been my passion.

Your name is associated with an ace filmmaker like Vikram Bhatt. Do you believe 'star kids' have it easier?

I think nepotism and star kids is something that gives you your first chance and I wouldn’t take that away from the fact that your first chance is something that you get but after that I think that you can be anybody’s child if you don’t have what it takes or if you don’t have the talent or the hard work and the determination you can’t make it. So I think, yes, you do get your first chance but the rest is up to you.

Is there any pressure of taking your father's legacy ahead?

It is not a pressure to take my father’s legacy ahead, it’s my passion, and it’s my ambition. I want to take the mantle of filmmaking way ahead and do my parents proud, yeah it’s an ambition.

Are you looking forward to collaborating with your father again?

Of course, I do look forward to collaborate with my father; I always do collaborate with him but in different ways. I mean in my first project I had him as an actor then producer, writer and now with the fact that I love Business Development as well, I think I am working with my Dad in various phases. Collaborating with my Dad is like collaborating with a powerhouse of creativity and I don’t think anything can take away from that.

What genre interests you the most?

I think I am a person who is still figuring it out my genre because I thought liked drama but I am moving towards horror and thriller and I think I wanna try every genre before I pick which one is my favourite.

Who has been your inspiration in Bollywood?

Everyone in Bollywood has in some ways been an inspiration, everybody who puts in their hard work and dedication and achieves success in a self-made way inspires me. I feel self-made people are people to look up to you know and I feel even if they have come from a film family taking that ahead is very very tough. So everyone in the industry got their name up there and has worked hard for it is an inspiration.

With so many new directors coming in every now and then, especially through the web space, do you think it has become difficult to make something binge-worthy as the competition has also increased massively?

I think the competition has made things more binge-wrothy because earlier when there was left competition whether in the film world or whether it was on OTT the audience had tasted the best, especially pre-Covid. With the coming of Covid people were forced to watch stuff at home and now if you’re not good in the first 50 secs to a minute you’ll be turned off and the channel would be changed on you. So I think competition has made content way more binge-worthy.

What is your lineup? What are you currently working on and what context can we expect from you?

I am currently working on a lot of stuff. My film which I woudn’t like to divulge much then there is stuff like Cold which I am producing and my father’s film Wicked and Hacked 2 so there’s a lot going on in the film world and the web world so I think there is a lot that you can expect from me in 2022.
