PeepingMoon Exclusive: 'Being heavily asthmatic, I feel the impact of celebrating Diwali with crackers,' says Amaara Sangam

Amaara Sangam, who was last seen in MX Player's web series Sanak: Ek Junoon, is all set to celebrate Diwali at home with her family. The actress, in an exclusive conversation with PeepingMoon.com, shared her plans for the festival of lights. "I am not religious, but Diwali is a good excuse for family time, so I plan to spend time at home with my family," Amaara said. Talking about hosting Diwali parties, she added, "I host multiple dinner parties for different friends during Christmas. But Diwali is just at home with family. I am not able to attend any Diwali parties because I’m working late on all days. As someone who doesn’t party much, I’m actually secretly glad I have that excuse."

When asked about celebrating Diwali in childhood, she promptly said, "Lots of food, some cheesy family movie and excessive love and warmth with family. The same way I do now. Some things never change." Remembering her first Diwali in London, away from her family, Amaara shared, "My best friend, Whitney, wanted to celebrate, so we got dressed in ethnic wear and went for a walk by the river, and to my luck, it started snowing. It was the first snow of that year and my first snow. We somehow made it back home and all my flatmates and I went to the park. We made snow angels, made snowmen, played snow fights, went sliding on snow. It was everything Diwali is about: a lot of laughter, love, fun and family-like friends."

Amaara, being heavily asthmatic, is against the use of firecrackers during Diwali. "I am heavily asthmatic. So, I feel the impact of celebrating Diwali with crackers. The first year I was back in India, I had so many attacks, I got a hairline fracture in my ribs and was bed ridden for months. And now I have a dog who has a very hard time because of noise from crackers around Diwali. So, not just for sustainability, environmental reasons, but also for personal reasons, I am very pro-cracker-free Diwali," she said.

When asked whether eco-friendly Diwali is the need of the hour, the actress shared, "Of course. I don’t think anyone educated would say otherwise. But I also believe it’s impossible to be 100% eco-friendly. The fact that we exist, we are not eco-friendly. I don’t have the job to police the world for how they choose to live their lives. I know many of us try to be Eco-friendly around Diwali too, and I would like to appreciate and acknowledge that. The most important thing is doing our best to be sensitive towards ourselves and others. Being as eco-friendly as possible, during Diwali or other times, becomes a natural bi-product."
