PeepingMoon Exclusive! Who will direct Deepika Padukone and Rishi Kapoor in 'The Intern' remake? Amit Sharma or Gauri Shinde?

Late January, Deepika Padukone in association with Sunir Kheterpal's Azure Entertainment and Hollywood's Warner Bros. announced the Hindi adaptation of Nancy Meyer's The Intern. Deepika and Rishi Kapoor were officially brought on board to play the lead characters, enacted by Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro respectively in the original. While the announcement took the internet by storm and left fans wowed, the team also received flak for announcing it without a director. Nearly two months later, the makers still haven't found a director for The Intern remake. Now PeepingMoon.com has learned that the producers are in talks with two filmmakers to helm this human drama but haven't zeroed in on anyone as yet.

"The producers are in discussion with Badhaai Ho director Amit Sharma and English Vinglish and Dear Zindagi fame Gauri Shinde. Both directors are known for their impeccably crafted direction and storytelling and have shown their interest in The Intern but no one has been booked for the job yet. Discussions are happening and fee negotiations are also underway. They are expected to finalize one of them by the next week," an industry source told us.

Sharma is currently busy with Ajay Devgn's Maidaan which is based on the golden era of football while Shinde hasn't announced any new project after her Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt coming-of-age drama released in 2016. She recently directed a Karan Johar featuring advertisement that highlights same-sex love but doesn't have any film in hand to work on. The makers are apparently in a dilemma to pick one between Sharma and Shinde and are expected to take the final call after considering all the factors.

The Intern is said to be an intimate relationship-driven drama set in and around the present-day workplace. The film revolves around a 70-year-old widower who, after his retirement, joins an online fashion site as a senior intern. Scheduled to go on floors in January 2021 with the same year release plan, the film takes us through how he adapts to the new job culture and becomes a father figure to his young boss, amidst a lot of drama, tears and feel-good moments.
