There’s something quite disruptive about what Abhishek Banerjee has been doing on-screen with the kind of projects he’s taking up and the kinds of characters he’s playing. He’s not disappearing behind the loud drama but he is letting his performances talk for themselves, be it as the comical Janaa (Stree franchise) or the stone-cold Hathoda Tyagi (Paatal Lok) - the wide range of performance and the sheer intent to level up is visible. Banerjee is flipping the idea of a character actor, and it’s working flawlessly in the modern Hindi cinema.
From starting his acting journey on stage in theatre, moving to casting and then becoming one of the most versatile performers in Indian cinema, it’d be safe to say that Banerjee is celebrated for his nuance, meaningful selection of screen work, and the inner fire to keep reinventing to move past the predictability. Take up his character of Hathoda Tyagi in Paatal Lok; he barely speaks through dialogues, but casts a strong impression through his chilling gaze and body language. Impression. Statement. And making the character unforgettable. That kind of an intense impact doesn’t come from enjoying a magnanimous screen time, but the precision to make the most with what’s in hand!
His portrayal as Compounder in the hit series Mirzapur takes a similar route of intensity. And as a treat to his audience, Banerjee is all set to revive the character in the upcoming Mirzapur: The Movie.
The actor also genre-hops! In Stree, the blockbuster comedy franchise, Banerjee plays the slightly paranoid friend Janaa, who makes you fall for his innocence but also tickles your funny bones with punchlines that _land_. Janaa was so incredibly loved by the audience that the whole of Maddock’s Horror-comedy universe has imprints of him, including Bhediya and Thamma!
Abhishek Banerjee is also creating serious waves with much-layered projects, one of it being Stolen (2023), a thriller that explores the exploitation of law enforcement by anti-social behaviour and the impact of mob-psychology, making for an off-beat release - that worked! Stolen was first premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival, was featured at the 14th Beijing International Film Festival, and even won accolades at the 2024 Skip City International Digital Cinema Festival, Japan, the Zurich Film Festival and All Asian Independent Film Festival.
For Banerjee, an off-beat performance and the commitment to justify his portrayal is something that adds meaning behind what he does - and it shows.
After winning hearts with Stolen and Toaster, Abhishek Banerjee buckles up for ‘Legacy’ with R Madhavan, ‘Lust Stories 2’, ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ with the original cast, ‘Side Heroes’ with Rakul Preet Singh and Nora Fatehi, ‘Section 84’ with Amitabh Bachchan, and his writing venture ‘Bollywood Bandar’ with director Anurag Kashyap at the helm.
Abhishek Banerjee is clearly on a roll with an interesting slate of projects coming up! And if the list is anything to go by, the audience can buckle up for shades that are yet to come from him!
