The film 'Mangal Pandey: The Rising', released 20 years ago, brought patriotism and historical events alive on the big screen. This 2005 film featured Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji, Ameesha Patel, Toby Stephens and Kirron Kher in important roles. Directed by Ketan Mehta and produced by Bobby Bedi, Ketan Mehta and Deepa Sahni, the story of this film was based on the life of freedom fighter Mangal Pandey. Aamir Khan grew his hair and moustache instead of a wig to present this character in a real way. Four years after 'Dil Chahta Hai' (2001), Aamir made a comeback on the big screen with this film.
Interestingly, director Ketan Mehta had planned to make this film in 1988 and at that time he wanted to cast Amitabh Bachchan and not Aamir. At the same time, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was first approached for the role of Jwala, but she refused at the last moment. The script was then narrated to Rani Mukerji, but she chose to play Heera, and the role of Jwala went to Ameesha Patel. Ameesha was suggested to be cast in the film by Aamir, who was impressed with her IQ level.
Hugh Jackman was initially chosen to play the role of Captain William Gordon, but after he declined, Toby Stephens was cast, who brought life to the character. During the shoot, Aamir would entertain his co-stars by performing on his old songs and mimicking a Nepali guide he had played in a TV ad.
After the film's release, the BJP demanded a ban on it, alleging that it misrepresented historical facts and tarnished the image of Mangal Pandey. The Samajwadi Party also demanded a ban on it. Despite this, the film, made at a cost of 37 crores, grossed 52.57 crores and was one of the highest grossing films of 2005. It was also screened at the Cannes Film Festival and A.R. Rahman's music was well appreciated.
