The film Sholay directed by Ramesh Sippy, released on 15 August 1975, is still alive in the hearts of cinema lovers. This film, adorned with stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar, is about to complete 50 years. The songs, dialogues of the film and the village named 'Ramgarh' are still on the tongue of the people.
But have you ever wondered where ‘Ramgarh’ actually is? So let us tell you that Sholay's Ramgarh is a fictional village, which was prepared for the story of the film. This is the same village where the story of characters like Thakur Baldev Singh, Jai-Veeru and Gabbar Singh unfolds. The village shown in the film was like a traditional Indian village - with farms, temples, Thakur's bungalow and mud houses.
Most of the film was shot in Ramanagara district of Karnataka. Gabbar Singh's hideout and surrounding scenes were shot in the hilly areas there. Gabbar's famous "Kitne aadmi the?" The scene was also shot on a rock in this area. The set of Thakur's bungalow and the main square of the village was prepared in Mumbai's Sippy Studios, which was built with such precision that it looked like a real village. The train robbery scene was shot near Panvel (Maharashtra).
Set designer Ram Yedekar worked hard to give Ramgarh a real village look. Although there are many Ramgarhs in the country in states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jharkhand, the Ramgarh of Sholay was completely a part of Salim-Javed's imagination. Even today, tourists visit the shooting locations of Sholay in Ramanagara, although the real set is no longer present. Still, guides still say - "Yahiin baitha tha Gabbar!”
