From Ram-Leela to Dhadak 2, stories where romance fought back

In Bollywood, romance has never been limited to just matters of the heart, it has often stood as an idea, a resistance, and at times, a bold rebellion. Time and again, cinema has empowered love to rise against rigid social structures, whether rooted in caste, class, family honour, or communal boundaries. Amidst these conflicts, emerged stories where love transformed into a powerful act of defiance. Now, carrying this legacy forward is Dhadak 2, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri. Let’s revisit some compelling films where love didn’t surrender, it fought back…

Dhadak 2 (2025): Directed by Shazia Iqbal, this film is not just a love story, but the spiritual sequel of love clashing with society. While the first 'Dhadak' revived the soul of ‘Sairat’ in Bollywood style, 'Dhadak 2' is expected to show the story of love and rebellion in more depth. Initial glimpses suggest that the film will not only touch the heart but also make you think about society and culture. The August 1 release is produced by Karan Johar, Umesh Kumar Bansal, Adar Poonawala, Apoorva Mehta, Meenu Arora, Somen Mishra and Pragati Deshmukh. It is presented by Dharma Productions, Zee Studios and Cloud 9 Pictures.

Laila Majnu (2018): This film by Sajid Ali was based on the backdrop of Kashmir, where love was lived to the extent of madness. The acting by Avinash Tiwari and Triptii Dimri showed that when the atmosphere is tense, love becomes another name for losing oneself.

Sairat (2016): Directed by Nagraj Manjule, this Marathi film showed the truth of casteism deeply rooted in Indian society in a very raw and fearless way. The story of Parshya and Archie was not just a love story, but a stone thrown in the stagnant water of society. Its success showed that when love breaks the shackles of high and low, it becomes bigger than cinema.

Ram-Leela (2013): This film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali was based on Shakespeare's 'Romeo-Juliet', but it had such a combination of Gujarati culture, family bloodshed and sexuality that it took it to a different level. The chemistry of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh connected the audience with the conflict between love and dignity.

Ishaqzaade (2012): This film by Habib Faisal shows love blossoming in a small town and the grip of patriarchy. The characters of Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor showed how a woman can stand up for her self-respect and love, even if she has to shed blood for it.
