Virat took over as captain in the shortest format in 2017 after MS Dhoni stepped down from his position. This is the first time Virat would be leading Team India in the ICC T20 World Cup, he has previously led the team to the final of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy and the semi-final of the 2019 ICC World Cup in the past.

Rohit Sharma is likely to take over as captain from Virat in T20Is after the World Cup.
