Ahead of Irrfan's first death anniversary, 'Piku' director Shoojit Sircar recalls actor's 'mysticism', says 'feel guilty I could not work with him again'

It's almost been a year since legendary film actor Irrfan left for heavenly abode, leaving a void in the hearts of all his fans, friends and family members. The actor, who was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018, passed away on April 29, 2020, due to colon infection. Now, talking about losing a close friend and colleague, director Shoojit Sircar has spoken about the 'magic of life' Irrfan believed in.

The filmmaker said, "I can’t believe it’s been a year since he left us. I recall him as God’s special child. He was that – very pure in terms of his craft, artistry and his conduct. That purity in his thoughts made him special as a person. He was like a free bird. He just always wanted to fly in the sky – ‘let’s fly’ is all that his spirit asked for, and he’d always say things that gave this away."

Talking about Irrfan's personality, Shoojit further said, "A lot of Irrfan’s personality has rubbed off on me. I sometimes feel guilty I could not work with him again but in the time that I got to know him, I realised that pretty much like him, I’ve also started to believe in the magic that life spins around us all the time. I believe in the magic of life that he believed in."

He concluded by saying, "I think he had this mystic quality as an artiste which got you addicted to him as a person. He believed in a kind of spirituality which showed in his eyes and work and his behaviour. He had that mysticism jo kheenchke uske paas leke jaata tha."

Shoojit directed Irrfan in the 2015 film Piku co-starring Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan.
