It resonates because it reflects lived-in experience of most women in this country: Taapsee Pannu on 'Thappad' trailer

You can always trust Taapsee Pannu to portray fiesty women on the silver screen and after initiating a dialogue about the importance of consent in sex with Pink (2016), the actress has now taken the issue of domestic violence heads on with Anubhav Sinha's Thappad. The trailer of the film released recently and netizens couldn't help but call it a 'tight slap' on Kabir Singh director Sandeep Reddy Vanga's face. The trailer captures the journey of a woman, role essayed by Taapsee who fights for justice after a domestic violence attack by her husband.

Stating how casual violence in relationships has unfortunately been normalised in our patriarchal society, Taapsee told a leading daily, "Some films, like this one, stay with you long beyond the mere narration. I tend to lean towards stories that have a larger impact." As the traialer asserts that a stray slap inflicted on one's partner, even if it happens only once, is not acceptable, the actress maintained, "Flawed characters are not problematic, the warped messaging is. Heroes are demi-gods here, so we need to be responsible about our messaging," adding, "That film reflected what their makers were; this one mirrors where we come from. Thappad's trailer resonates [with the female audience] because it reflects lived-in [experience] of most women in this country."

Last but not the least, Taapsee signed off by saying, "I can play a damsel in distress, but I can never portray the woman who is leaning on a man to get her act together."

Thappad, produced by Anubhav and Bhushan Kumar, will release on February 28.
