Smriti Irani taunts Deepika Padukone for her JNU visit, says 'her political affiliation was known back in 2011'

Deepika Padukone took social media by storm with her recent visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi to extend her support to students and professors protesting against the violence on the campus. The actress, who was in the Capital to promote her film Chhapaak, was at the receiving end of trolls and hate comments from social media users. While several Bollywood celebrities lauded her for being the only celebrity to meet those who were subjected to violence, politicians and right-wing groups slammed her brutally, so much so that they demanded a ban on Chhapaak. Talking about the same, Smriti Irani, who is the Union Minister of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), took a sharp dig at the Deepika in a recent interview. Smriti, a former model turned television actress and now a politician, told it is Deepika's right to stand with 'tukde tukde gang' as her political affiliation is well-known since 2011. She then went on to say that she is supporting those who want the destruction of India.

"You are standing with people who celebrate everytime a CRPF jawan is killed. She knew that she is standing with these people. It was not unexpected to us that she was going to stand with people who want the destruction of India. It's her right to stand next to people who say 'Bharat tere tukde honge'. I can't deny her that right. I want to know what Deepika Padukone's political affiliation is. Anybody who has read the news would know why she would stand with the protesters. She made her political affiliation known in 2011 that she supports the Congress Party. If people are surprised by this, it is because they didn't know. There were a lot of admirers of hers who have just discovered her position," Smriti told.
