’Chhapaak’ social experiment: Deepika Padukone aka Malti steps out with acid attack survivors in the city to see how society responds to them

Amidst the bustling streets of the city, the makers of Chhapaak have undertaken a social experiment to know people’s reactions around acid attack survivors. The lead actress Deepika Padukone steps out as Malti along with other acid attack survivors in the city, disguised. An eye-opener on how we don’t even realise how we react.

The video begins with the actress telling the viewers how everyone recognises her as 'Deepika' whereever she goes but today she wants Malti to be seen by everyone. Unrecognised, she walks across local shops and street vendors to gauge the response of people to acid attack survivors. Never has an actor of this stature has gone out and done something like this. The stigma that stays deeply entrenched in our society is visible in the reactions of the others. This social experiment shows how society responds to acid attack survivors- do people shy away, do they become indifferent, do they empathise or do they come forward and engage? This experiment is a reflection of the behavioural reactions what the survivors have to face on a daily- hourly basis from the society.

Deepika took to her social media and shared the video of the experiment. Watch it here:

Starring actress Deepika as Malti, Chhapaak is a tale of hope and triumph which is all set to release on January 10, 2020. From the theme song ‘Chhapaak’ to 'Ab Ladna Hai' to 'Muh Dikhai 2.0', all the campaigns surely are the retrospective mirrors that have been widely appreciated by the audience. With this experiment, team Chhapaak endeavours to pose a mirror at all of us. While some of us will smile at our reflection because we will see hope and acceptance, the others will take a moment to pause and reflect. The important question being, “What do you see in the mirror?”.

The film is produced by Fox Star Studios, Deepika's KA Production, Meghna's and Govind Singh Sandhu's Mriga Films, and is written by Atika Chohan and Meghna.
