She refused Steven Spielberg and other things you might not know about Sridevi

The untimely death of Sridevi left us with many memories of the superstar. Here's a  trivia on the actress and her professional life...

  • The stunning and much-in-demand Sridevi had refused a role offered by Steven Spielberg in Jurassic Park! She simply wasn’t ready to leave Bollywood, even for a short period of time.

  • She would reportedly constantly receive marriage proposals from rich American and British-born Indians – and naturally, she turned them all down.

Did you know that the makers of Baazigar were keen on casting her in a double role? However, they themselves canned the idea when they realized that the audiences would simply not be able to accept Shah Rukh Khan’s character killing her on screen.

  • She was the highest-paid Hindi film actress from 1985-1992!
  • When Sri entered Bollywood, she was not able to speak a word of Hindi. She was quick to pick up the language though and first dubbed her dialogues for the film Chandni.

  • Despite a raging fever, she finished shooting for the perky song ‘Na Jaane Kaha Se Aayi Hai’ from the film Chaalbaaz.

Similarly, Sridevi had a high fever, 102, when the song ‘Kante Nahi Kat Te’ was being shot. Director Shekhar Kapoor suggested they cancel the shoot. However, realizing that it would lead to loss of money, she continued to shoot even in the artificial rains inside the studio. Finally, she collapsed with a high fever and a doctor had to be called. He administered an injection and within two hours, she was back shooting!

  • Sri was multi-lingual and fluent in several languages including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English.

  • No other Bollywood heroine has done more double roles than she has — a whopping seven of them! She did so in Guru, Naaka-Bandi, Chaalbaaz, Banjaran, Khuda Gawah, Lamhe, Gurudev and a few other projects which were shelved.
  • Her mother Rajeshwari had played a small part in S.S. Vasan's Telugu hit Shanti Niwaasam. The film was later remade as Gharana in Hindi.

Did you know that Sridevi was not the original choice of filmmaker Balu Mahendra when he decided to make Moondram Pirai in Hindi as Sadma?

He had apparently approached Dimple Kapadia who had chosen Saagar for her comeback and had already given her dates to Ramesh Sippy. Sadma turned out to be one of the jewels in Sri’s crown.

  • Sri had made her first appearance on the Hindi film screen in the Ashok Kumar-Vijaylalitha starrer Raani Mera Naam (1972), as a child artiste. Julie followed much later.

  • It was during the shooting of Lamhe in London, that she had received news of her father's demise. Sri took a break of 16 days to perform all the rituals and returned to London on the seventeenth day, professional to the core.
