Va va voom: Salman Khan's Race 3 worldwide collections inches towards Rs 200 Cr

Race 3 has been largely slammed by critics. The film has received poor reviews across the country, with its glaring flaws – lack of narrative logic, wafer-think plot, lacklustre performances – coming in for criticism. However, the film, helmed by the one and only Salman Khan, has been racing ahead at the box office. The Remo D’Souza directorial, which released on June 15, has already crossed the Rs.100 crore at the Indian box office. Desi audiences clearly couldn’t be too bothered with what the critics had to say, and have embraced this larger-than-life actioner complete with car crashes, explosions, combats, cat-fights and wingsuit diving stunts.

Turns out, Bollywood fans abroad are no different. The multi-starrer has raked in Rs.181.32 crore worldwide over the first weekend and is soon expected to reach the Rs.200 crore mark!

Renowned Hollywood trade magazine Variety had a blast analysing this “purposefully unhinged masala,” poking fun at its narrative speed bumps and corny lyrics, among other flaws. But it does point out, that “the Bollywood sequel delivers fast and furious action, spirited song and dance.” Whatever it is, it’s working.

Yesterday, the film defeated the Monday blues proving that despite a dip in collections, it was still doing well at the ticket windows during a work week. Race 3 earned Rs.14.24 crore on Monday, which brings its domestic net collection to a shade over Rs.120 crore in four days.

Starring Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Jacqueline Fernandez, Daisy Shah, Saqib Saleem and Freddy Daruwala, the film earned Rs.39.16 crore on Sunday at the domestic box office, taking its collection to an amazing Rs.106.47 crore. The film, the third in the Race franchise, became the fourth Salman Khan starrer to register such a huge number at the box office within its opening weekend. Khan’s other thumping hits like Tiger Zinda Hai, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan also share the record of reaching the Rs.100 crore target at the box office within the first three days of their release.

With the film pleasing global audiences as well it will be interesting to see the total figures it achieves.
