'The idea was to treat James Bond like a government employee,' says Raj Nidimoru on Manoj Bajpayee's Srikant Tiwari in 'The Family Man'

Manoj Bajpayee's Amazon Prime Video series The Family Man garnered much appreciation for its taut narrative with a dash of Raj & DK's trademark humour. Now, as the series is getting its second season soon, the director duo spoke to a leading daily about Manoj's character named Srikant Tiwari, a 'world-class spy'. Raj Nidimoru revealed that they never wanted to give the character cool gadgets but keep him real with middle-class values. Stating that though Srikant has a cool job, he is still a government employee with James Bond-like characteristics.

"We didn't want to give him cool gadgets or slow-motion action sequences. Our spy had to be from Chembur, eating vada pav, riding a scooter, and asking his boss for a raise. Srikant's [Tiwari, Bajpayee's character] middle-class values are the charm of the show. On paper, this man has a cool job, but in the end, it's a government job. So, we went with the idea of treating James Bond like a government employee. We developed the script for one-and-a-half years with Suman Kumar. Sumit Arora added his funny zest to the dialogues," Raj told.

He further added that the series gave them a chance to develop characters. "Here, the villains too have back-stories. Usually, shows about counter-terrorism are grim and gritty. But we treated some sequences with humour, which made it unique and palatable to a large section of the audience," he added.

The Family Man released on Amazon Prime Video on September 20, 2019. Apart from Manoj, the series stars Neeraj Madhav, Priyamani, Sharib Hashmi, Gul Panag and others. The release date of the second season is yet to be announced. It will see Samantha Akkineni join the cast in a pivot role.
