Saif Ali Khan on Sacred Games row: “You might be killed if you criticize the government in India”

Saif Ali Khan's foray into the web with the Netflix Orignal series Sacred Games, based on Vikram Chandra’s novel of the same name and directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, has been making headlines for the past one week. The series, also starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the key role, ran into legal trouble last week when a plea was filed in the Delhi High Court seeking to remove certain sections that were alleged to be derogatory to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Expressing dismay, Saif shared with a leading daily, that if a situation is motivated by someone trying to get mileage, that's lamentable. "Some people try and gain mileage. They watch like hawks for anyone to say anything that can be politically manipulated. For me, as an actor, it's important to be part of the creative journey without worrying too much about this. If it has genuinely hurt people's sentiments, that's another story.  People are always looking for attention, and the easiest way to get that is to attack a movie or a movie star," stated the actor.

For Saif, this episode has turned out to a frustrating one with outrage against the Netflix Orignal show and complaints being filed. "It will be deeply frustrating if something happens to the show. If someone says you can’t air this or if Netflix is discontinued. Then that will be my turn to be outraged. There’s no genuine cause for outrage. Anurag and Vikram have not been ridiculous in their violence, their approach to sex or their subject matter. We have not taken advantage of the fact that there’s no censorship," lamented the actor, while speaking to a popular website.

In Saif's viewpoint, "Tomorrow if we talk about making the Mahabharata, I’m wondering how you’d show Krishna...to depict someone with a god-like status, this is the best platform for it. We have to censor ourselves."

"I don’t know how much you can criticise your government in India, somebody might kill you," exclaimed Saif, expressing his fears."If you date someone from the wrong caste, somebody will kill you in some parts of India. That’s just the way it is. We are at the edge but we try and make interesting things. It’s frustrating when somebody tries to pull it down. Let’s hope justice and some better sense prevails here," stated Sartaj aka Saif, before signing off.
