The question was asked of Manish Malhotra, who is busy styling the new generation of Bollywood stars like Janhvi, Khushi and Shanaya Kapoor, Ananya Panday and Suhana Khan, whether they were able to carry off his ensembles with the same panache that, say, Rekha, Madhuri Dixit, Urmila Matondkar, Kajol, Karisma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon did in the 1990s. And the celebrated Indian couturier and costume stylist revolutionizing Bollywood fashion told PeepingMoon.com’s ‘BenchMARK Conversations’ podcast that it was impossible to compare because the genres are different, in today’s times so much is available, different designers, stylists, and there’s social media.
Talking to Mark Manuel about fashion, films and fame in the podcast presented by Reliance Digital, Manish said, “The youngsters of today know their makeup, they know what’s looking good on them, they are at the stage where they are experimenting with their looks, trying on different clothes. Back in the day when I started, glamorous actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, and Manisha Koirala were discovering themselves and we didn’t have much to look at. No social media. So I was helping them to discover themselves. Today’s generation knows so much more, you see it on Instagram, there’s so much more knowledge, but also so little space for mistakes.”
