Storyline
'Sarzameen' is an emotional and political thriller set in a sensitive region like Kashmir. The story revolves around Major Vijay Menon (Prithviraj) and his family - wife Meera (Kajol) and son Harman (Ibrahim Ali Khan). While Vijay is a dedicated soldier, his son's activities bring him under suspicion. This is the strongest aspect of the film - when patriotism and a father's love stand face to face with each other.
Acting
Prithviraj Sukumaran has infused depth and dignity into the character of Major Vijay. His firm look in every frame strengthens the image of a true soldier. Kajol has also done a great job as a troubled but strong mother. But the biggest surprise is Ibrahim Ali Khan. The way he has played a character with complex and grey shades is commendable. Maturity is visible in his expressions and intensity. The film is a must watch because of the great actors.
Direction
Kayoze Irani – son of Boman Irani who makes his directorial debut with this film – has chosen a completely serious and sensitive story and he has brought it to the screen with utmost delicacy. The scenes of Kashmir, the discipline of the army, the emotional conflict between father and son, everything is woven meticulously. The film forces you to think and does not deviate from the drama anywhere.
Dialogues
The dialogues are strong. At many places, they touch the heart, especially when Vijay questions his son about country and duty. The dialogues have depth and they further strengthen the seriousness of the film.
Music
The background score is quite impressive. The music matches beautifully with the war and emotional scenes. Some of the patriotic songs will be remembered for a long time.
Overall
‘Sarzameen’ is a sensitive, powerful and deep film that tells a very important story in today's times. The father-son relationship, the conflict between duty and patriotism touches the heart.
